12:01 am - 11:59 pm
In celebration of the Illinois Bicentennial, The Western Illinois Amateur Radio Club will sponsor an on-air operating event to encourage amateur (ham) radio operators from all over the world to contact hams in Illinois. The goal for each operator will be to make contact on the air with at least one participating station in each of the 102 Illinois counties. Operators who provide evidence of making contact with at least one station in each county will be awarded a certificate acknowledging the accomplishment. The WIARC will coordinate the activities of amateur stations in each Illinois county, publishing online the operating schedule for each station allowing those persuing the award maximum opportunity to accomplish the feat.
Preliminary details of the event announcement are:
The Illinois Bicentennial Challenge
Purpose: To encourage ham operators worldwide to contact Illinois stations during the 2018 Illinois Bi-Centennial period
Goal: Contact Illinois stations in all 102 Illinois counties
Challenge Period: August 26, 2018 (Bicentennial of the Illinois Territory’s Constitutional Convention’s adoption of the state’s first constitution) through December 3, 2018 (Bicentennial of Illinois being admitted to statehood)
Procedure: Illinois stations willing to upload activity logs to WIARC (“Activator stations”) operate during the Challenge Period from all 102 counties and make contacts with stations worldwide, signing e.g. W9XYZ/IL200. “Chaser stations” also upload logs to WIARC. WIARC verifies contact matches and issues a special “Illinois Bicentennial Challenge” certificate to successful Chasers. Detailed procedure (suggested):
Activator stations post activation plans (as detailed as possible: callsign, county, activation period, band(s) and mode(s) to ILQSO reflector (ILQSO@mailman.qth.net).
WIARC maintains a weekly update of activator plans on WIARC website (www.w9awe.org/challenge).
WIARC coordinates with other IL clubs to ensure that all 102 counties are activated multiple times during the Challenge Period.
Activators operate during the planned period signing W9XYZ/IL200. Send logs to firstname.lastname@example.org in a timely manner in Cabrillo format or Excel. Activations not pre-posted qualify as long as the logs are submitted, but posting activation plans is encouraged.
Chasers send logs to email@example.com in Cabrillo format or Excel.
WIARC maintains logs, verifies matching contacts, issues certificate to stations contacting all 102 counties during the Challenge Period. Certificates will be in electronic format unless a hard copy is requested; requests for hard copy certificates to be accompanied by a 9×12 SASE and $3 US currency.
Special Exception: All contacts with Illinois stations during the 2018 ILQP (1700Z October 21, 2018 to 0100Z October 22, 2018) are eligible if the Chaser’s log is uploaded per rules of the ILQP (www.w9awe.org/ILQP.html).
