Memorial Day Sesquicentennial Observation

Monday, May 28, 2018

Woodlawn Cemetery, 405 E Main St, Carbondale, Illinois

9:30 am - 6:00 pm

May 28th, 2018 marked the 150th national Memorial Day. In Jackson County, Illinois, the County, the Cities of Murphysboro and Carbondale and the John A Logan Museum will partner to mark this important occasion. These partners take immense pride in the fact that Logan, the widely acknowledged founder of the national holiday, was born in Jackson County, Illinois in what is now Murphysboro and lived in Carbondale when, as Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, he issued Gen. Order No. 11, his “Memorial Day Order” on May 5, 1868.

Memorial Day activities will begin in Carbondale’s Woodlawn Cemetery, then continue at the John A Logan Monument in Murphysboro and conclude at the General John A Logan Museum. The day will include an expanded Woodlawn Cemetery Memorial Day program, a wreath laying at the Logan Monument, a grand barbecue by a nationally known master of the art, a presentation by the authors of a controversial new book on the origin of Memorial Day, and a serenade by a Civil War band.
