The Bridge Dedication and Veterans Memorial Celebration is a weekend festival planned for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 15, 16, and 17 in Savanna, IL. It will be a special, fun-filled weekend of celebrations and events designed to honor and commemorate the service of Dale Gardner, a Savanna High School graduate, veteran and former NASA Astronaut and the areas local veterans who are the namesakes of the new Dale Gardner Veterans Memorial Bridge spanning the Mississippi River between Savanna, IL and Sabula, IA. There will be a Veterans Parade through downtown Savanna beginning at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 16, followed by a Veterans Memorial Ceremony in Marquette Park at 2:00 pm. On Sunday, June 17 a program entitled “Being an Astronaut” will be conducted by three former NASA Astronauts and colleagues of Dale Gardner at West Carroll High School beginning at 11:00 am. The main event of the weekend will be the Bridge Dedication featuring Governor Bruce Rauner and three former NASA Astronauts at 1:30 pm in Marquette Park. A U.S.Navy fly-over will take place weather permitting. A traveling NASA exhibit, the Journey to Tomorrow, will be on display in Savanna from Friday, June 15 at noon until Sunday, June 17 at 4:00 pm. The exhibit immerses visitors in a fun-filled interactive experience which includes learning stations and engaging activities. Current NASA missions will be on display along with genuine moon rock artifacts.
